The goal of the Design Challenge is to develop more sustainable packaging services through the design of environmentally preferable packaging and the complementary systems needed for value recovery using cradle-to-cradle principles.

Package Specifications

Package design must be able to perform within existing distribution systems. The packaging material may be designed for recovery within the existing recycling or composting infrastructure or within a system that needs to be developed.

The package must be able to adequately protect one or two books (not to exceed 20 lbs) in a typical e-commerce fulfillment and distribution system. The order will be fulfilled in a distribution warehouse with a high-speed conveyor system and shipped via ground transportation systems comparable to UPS or FedEx. The package will travel through at least three hubs for further sorting. Assume that the delivery distance of the package from warehouse to suburban house is 500 miles.
