Multiple entries
Q.  Is it possible to submit two packaging projects for the EPA competition?
A.  Yes, it is possible that you could submit two designs - one design for the single book package and another design for the multi-book package. You will need to submit two entry forms in this case.

Intellectual Property
Q.  I am interested in submitting some work that I developed for a client. Who owns the intellectual property of submissions?
A.  All entries received will be considered public information. Entrants are responsible for the protection of any intellectual property associated with their entry by patent or other means.

Dimension and font specifications for submissions
Q.  Is there a particular format for drawings that should be (or is) required? I am referring to drawing standards, such as ASME Y14.X - 1994, or the ISO standard? Is there a particular font and size to be used? Is there a particular sheet size of paper (i.e.: 8.5" x 11", A2, etc) that should be used?
A.  There are no particular size or font specifications for the drawings. However, please make sure that your electronic drawing file is sized to print on an 11" x 17" or smaller sheet of paper. Please use 8.5" X 11" and nothing smaller than a 10 pt font for the narrative portion of the submission.

Dimension requirements for packaging
Q.  I understand that the package must be able to adequately protect one or two books (not to exceed 20 lbs.) in a typical e-commerce fulfillment and distribution system. Are there any particular dimension requirements for the package?
A.  As you noted, there are not specific dimension requirements for the package. However, books come in standard categories of sizes. For detailed descriptions see this web link.
Barnes and Nobles simplifies these sizes by the following (note they do not mention width):
  Book Sizes
4to (Quarto): A book that is up to 12" tall.
8vo (Octavo): A book that is up to 9 3/4" tall.
12mo (Duodecimo): A book that is up to 7 3/4" tall.
16mo (Sextodecimo): A book that is up to 6 3/4" tall.
24mo: A book that is up to 5 3/4" tall.
32mo: A book that is up to 5" tall.
48mo: A book that is up to 4" tall.
64mo: A book that is up to 3" tall.
Folio: A book that is up to 15" tall.
Elephant Folio: A book that is up to 23" tall.
Atlas Folio: A book that is up to 25" tall.
Double Elephant Folio: A book that is up to 50" tall.
There are gradations within these size classes. Justify whatever dimension you select keeping in mind the balance of material considerations against the interest of as universal a solution as is sensible. Maybe standard shipping envelope sizes already reflect some sort of industry consensus on this.

Package design for books or books, tapes and discs
Q.  Is the package design to be only for books? Only for tapes and disks? Or must it be universal for all the items?
A.  The package design must at a minimum adequately protect a book(s). I believe that the judging will be flexible around this issue. However, if the packaging requirements for shipping are similar, there is clearly an advantage if the packaging can be used for more than one product group (i.e. CD's, DVD's, and videos).
Please note that there is a different entry category for a single versus a multiple book entry and each will be judged separately.

Call for entries and submission dates
Q.  When I looked at the schedule I saw that the call for entries was dated April 21st. Does that mean I am too late to enter the competition or is possible to send by the deadline Aug 15th?
A.  The call for entries formally began on April 21st of this year. In order to participate, the only deadline you need to meet is submission of your entry by August 15th, 2003.
