Winners will be selected based on the degree to which cradle
to cradle design principles are incorporated into packaging and
system design. Entries will be evaluated on a variety of levels
from materials to system considerations. It is understood that
different entries may emphasize certain elements more than others
(e.g. recovery logistics more than packaging). Cradle to cradle
innovations like any design innovations may deal with change in
the near or long term. We anticipate that some entries will include
innovations possible in the near term and others may submit designs
that require more substantial changes (i.e. infrastructure oriented
change) reflecting longer term vision. Both are welcomed. The
determination of the judges will be final.
Judging criteria
Below are the specific crieteria that will be considered when
judging the award. For fuller explanations, please refer to the
Judging Criteria section in the Entry Form download.
1. Performance
For example: Does the packaging adequately protect
a single or multiple order of books, CDs or videos considering
the typical distribution environment? |
2. Materials
For example: Does this design represent a major innovation
in materials for this application, or is this primarily an
optimized design using traditional materials? |
3. Physical Design
For example: Is the packaging designed for material
recovery or reuse? |
4. System
For example: Given the distributed nature of the
shipping packaging typical e-commerce book sales, propose
a system that would allow cradle to cradle cycling of this
packaging through reuse or recovery. |
5. Economics
For example: Describe cost implications of design
(i.e., lightweighting, labor costs, warehousing/storage costs,
transportation, materials savings, etc.). |
6. Marketing
For example: Propose a mechanism through which e-commerce
vendors or other entities might promote the use and recovery
of this packaging. |
Judging Process
MBDC will pre-screen the entries and send the best 20 entries
on to the judges. The number of winners or honorable mention will
be up to the discretion of the judges.
