MBDC news for April, 2003:

Monthly Feature: The Promise of Principled Design
by Teresa Heinz

"From their elegant insistence on 'the rights of humanity and nature to co-exist' to their call to 'eliminate the concept of waste,' the [Hannover] Principles echo the deep human instinct—and wisdom—to care for the world. Indeed, they have become a cultural touchstone, providing information and grounding not just for the design community but also for all those devoted to bringing forth a world of social equity, environmental health and peaceful prosperity."

Originally published in 1992, the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Hannover Principles was completed at the end of 2002, and is now in publication. This month's feature story, adapted from Teresa Heinz's introduction to the new volume, reflects on the Hannover Principles and their contribution to the movement of sustainable design.

EPA/MBDC Packaging Design Challenge Has Begun

The EPA Office of Solid Waste, in partnership with MBDC, has announced the launch of a design challenge to rethink and redesign e-commerce shipping packaging for a cradle-to-cradle life cycle. The design challenge is specifically targeted at the shipping packaging associated with the suburban home delivery of Internet purchases of books, including systems for packaging recovery.

Winning entries will be selected based on the degree to which cradle-to-cradle principles are incorporated and will be displayed at Pack Expo in Las Vegas, Oct. 13-15, 2003. Winners will receive the EPA's Cradle to Cradle Design Award for E-Commerce Shipping Packaging and Logistics.

All interested groups and individuals are invited to participate. To learn more about the design challenge, visit http://www.mbdc.com/challenge.

April 11th Cradle-to-Cradle Workshop

Participants from the fields of architecture, engineering, industrial design, and the government sector attended MBDC’s "Introduction to Cradle to Cradle Design" workshop on Friday April 11th. The diversity of the participants’ backgrounds, including several participants from the EPA, manufacturing companies, and students, enriched the experience and highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability.

Through exercises and discussions, participants articulated their vision of a world where industry and commerce follows nature’s design principles. Small groups discussed how cradle-to-cradle principles could be used to redesign lighting fixtures, clothing, children’s toys, computers, and fast food packaging. The workshop concluded with a discussion of how to integrate cradle-to-cradle principles into organizational missions and processes, as well as product design.
