MBDC news for February, 2003:

Monthly Feature: A Model for Change

"What I think is so exciting about Model U is that it opens the door to a whole new way of looking at things, just like the Model T did. The vision behind Model U is entirely positive."

Ford's Model U concept car, unveiled at the North American International Auto Show last month, was built around design concepts from Ford's Brand Imaging Group in Irvine, California, and technologies and environmental materials developed in Ford Research Laboratory. MBDC's addition to the design team gave the impetus for a reevaluation of the aspirations for the car, especially its environmental vision. The positive, hopeful vision that McDonough and Braungart have been spreading for years found fertile ground in the Model U.

"Green by Design" Symposium Held in Grand Rapids

On February 5th and 6th MBDC participated in the Green by Design symposium in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Held at Steelcase Inc's Steelcase University Learning Center, the symposium provided its 250 participants with workshops and speeches by leaders in different areas of sustainable business. The program included a keynote speech by William McDonough, followed by workshops from Ken Alston of MBDC on sustainable product development, Jacquelyn Ottman of J. Ottman Consulting on green marketing, and Prof. Stuart Hart of UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School on business strategies for sustainability.

Symposium participants, representing a variety of industries as well as government and academia, engaged in lively discussions on the opportunities of sustainable design. In the product development workshops, MBDC's Ken Alston and Phil Storey presented participants with principles and approaches to understanding and pursuing sustainability in product design, as well as interactive exercises in which participants applied cradle-to-cradle principles to product and system design.

Green by Design was underwritten by a generous grant from the Wege Foundation and co-sponsored by Steelcase Inc. and Grand Rapids Community College. Our thanks to these organizations for putting on a well organized and valuable event.
