The Extravagant Gesture
"Nature is nothing if not extravagant. Four billion years
of natural design, forged in the cradle of evolution, has yielded
such a profusion of forms we can barely grasp the vigor and diversity
of life on Earth." The new monthly feature story on MBDC.com
is an excerpt from Bill McDonough's and Michael Braungart's essay
in the newly published collection, Sustainable Planet: Solutions
for the Twenty-First Century. This feature explores some of
the lessons of creativity and extravagance we can learn from nature
and apply to design.

Intelligent Electronics Design
Gets EU Regulatory Boost
On October 11th, the European Parliament and EU governments agreed
to language in the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) giving individual producers incentives to design
electronics products for post-use recycling. The agreement assigns
individual producers (rather than the industry as a whole) responsibility
for funding WEEE collection and recycling. Companies that invest
in ecologically intelligent designs like products of service,
for the recovery of their technical nutrients after use, can now
plan to reap the benefits, rather than relying on a system that
favors the 'lowest common denominator' of cheap design.
Read
about the agreement on the ENS website.

Ford Rouge's Vision of Sustainable
Manufacturing Draws Continued Interest
As Ford Motor Company's revitalization of its River Rouge manufacturing

and ecologically intelligent design strategies. Engineering News-Record
(ENR) is the latest publication to feature the project, of which
William McDonough + Partners led the master planning and included
MBDC's involvement. The ENR article focuses on how Bill McDonough's
ideas were tailored to find design solutions that meet Ford's
technical requirements.
